High Achievement Scholars Plan and Build Cardboard CIty

SN-Item 3--Higher Achievement Plan Cardboard CItyOn Monday, March 10, 16 ACPS Higher Achievement scholars spent their day visiting the architecture firm, Torti Gallas and Partners, Inc. in Silver Spring, Md. The scholars, ranging from fifth to eighth grade, learned about city planning and the behind-the-scenes work that takes place when constructing buildings. Architects from the firm created an interactive agenda that included challenging the scholars to create a strong structure in groups through the Marshmallow Challenge and constructing their own neighborhood with cardboard boxes and various building materials used by architects. Higher Achievement is a rigorous after-school and Summer Academy program located at Francis C. Hammond Middle School. Its mission is to equip middle school students with the necessary skills to succeed in high school and college.
