ALEXANDRIA, VA – At its Nov. 17 Board of Directors meeting, Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) awarded a contract to the joint venture Traylor-Shea for the RiverRenew Tunnel System (RiverRenew). Traylor-Shea will design and construct the project for 454.4 million.

Upon completion in July 2025, RiverRenew will provide Alexandria with cleaner and healthier waterways. It will ensure that the city is in compliance with a 2017 state law and will solve a sewer problem that has existed since the 19th century.

“AlexRenew is excited to partner with Traylor-Shea to improve the health and quality of Alexandria’s waterways on RiverRenew, the largest infrastructure project in the City of Alexandria’s history,” said Karen Pallansch, AlexRenew CEO.

The project includes a two-mile-long, 12-foot-wide tunnel, shafts, and other sewer infrastructure that will help prevent about 130 million gallons of sewage from polluting the Potomac River, Hunting Creek, and Hooffs Run each year.

For the last two years, AlexRenew, with support from the city, has worked to move forward on RiverRenew.

The Traylor-Shea team consists of Traylor Bros, Inc., and J.F. Shea Co. They will be assisted by Jacobs Engineering and Corman Kokosing Construction Co. Traylor-Shea has completed more than 15 tunnel projects across the country in the last three decades.

Most of the project will be done by workers in Alexandria and the Washington metro area. Having overcome previous hurdles, AlexRenew is not concerned about beginning design and construction during the pandemic.

“RiverRenew is on track to meet its incredibly aggressive completion timetable,” Pallansch said. “AlexRenew will continue to fulfill our vital mission to clean wastewater, working collaboratively with our community to solve our environmental challenges proactively and through effective local, long-term investments.”
