ALEXANDRIA, VA – Over the weekend, photos of Alexandria City Hall and the George Washington Masonic National Memorial went viral. The reason? Alexandria is showing its support for Ukraine, at war with Russia to stop an invasion.

Since fighting began last week, hundreds of Ukrainians have been killed, and hundreds of thousands have been displaced from their homes.

“I imagine we will keep [City Hall lighted] that way for the foreseeable future. I certainly join with so many of our residents who are shocked and disgusted by the unprovoked, unwarranted violence that Russia has perpetrated against her neighbor,” said Alexandria’s mayor Justin Wilson. “There is a sense of
helplessness that so many have felt. This seemed like a basic way that Alexandria could show
our support for the brave citizens of Ukraine who are bravely fighting for their sovereignty and
freedom right now.”
