Alexandria, VA – Punxsutawney Phil predicted an early spring this year. But since he’s only right 39% of the time, we do not endorse basing your spring timetable on a groundhog. However, now is the right time to start sowing your seeds indoors!

According to almanac.com, the last spring frost occurs on March 30, meaning now is the time to plant. What are the benefits of starting seeds indoors? Simply put, you give your plants a cozy head start in a race. They are safe from weather fluctuations, unwelcome animals, and harsh weather conditions. Here are some helpful tips to get started:

  1. Choose a nutrient-rich seed starting mix to support early growth;
  2. Place your seed trays in an area that receives lots of sunlight or simulate sunlight by using fluorescent lights;
  3. Keep your soil moist but not overwatered; and,
  4. As your seedlings grow, transplant them to larger containers to prevent crowded roots.

Explore the Almanac.com website for information on what plants to start in March. This website will generate a spreadsheet of plants and dates to start seeds indoors and outdoors, and the last dates to plant based on your zip code. In Alexandria, you will want to start Cantaloupes, Collards, Cucumbers, Pumpkins, Watermelons, Winter/Summer Squashes (such as zucchini), and tomatoes in late February or Early March. Consult your local gardener for seed recommendations.
