Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt Named Region Superintendent of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt, the superintendent of Alexandria City Public Schools, has been named Superintendent of the Year in Region Four of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS).
“It is a privilege to be selected as the Region Four Superintendent of the Year,” Wyatt said in a statement. “This acknowledgment is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our entire school community and I share it with all those who have joined me to be on our one team, one journey mission.”
She is one of eight superintendents in the state to receive this honor. She was recognized for her leadership and dedication to excellence in education.
“I am grateful to lead such an exceptional group of educators and staff to work alongside families and community members who work every day to ensure every student succeeds,” she said.
Other area superintendents pointed out that Wyatt has created a culture where every student can thrive. Among her accomplishments in her second year, her initiatives have led to improvements in student outcomes, staff development, and community engagement. Data tracking on-time graduation and dropout rates illustrates the improvement in both categories over the last year across nearly every student group.
Additionally, SOL pass rates in English demonstrated student growth and achievement during the 2023-2024 school year. As a result, every school in the ACPS system achieved the highest designation possible for performance from the state’s Department of Education. In Math, 15 of 17 schools earned the highest designation.
Wyatt will be honored, along with her fellow region winners, during the VASS Spring Conference on April 28. Superintendent of the Year will be selected at the event.
“The Alexandria City School Board is proud to celebrate Dr. Kay-Wyatt for being named the Region Four Superintendent of the Year,” said Chair Dr. Michelle Rief. “This honor reflects her unwavering commitment and dedication to our students, staff, and Alexandria community. I wish her the best as she is considered for Virginia State Superintendent of the Year by VASS.”

As a student at ACHS, I do not see this culture “where every student can thrive” she has created. I see policies meant to line her pockets, a chronic lack of communication with students (which she also forces upon school board members), threatening students with daily announcements and propaganda, and censorship of our school’s media. This award is a joke, I can’t wait to see her fired.
