Little Birdie Opens in Del Ray With Japanese Milk Bun Chicken Sandwiches

Alexandria, VA – Little Birdie is set to reshape the Del Ray dining scene this June, introducing a fresh take on the chicken sandwich in Alexandria, VA. Located at 1504B Mount Vernon Ave., former location of Benny Deforza’s Pizza, Little Birdie combines casual accessibility, upscale seasonal ingredients, and a carefully designed dining experience with an open kitchen.
The team behind the concept, Matthew Sloan and Eric Brannon of Matt & Tony’s All Day Kitchen + Bar, has earned recognition as a RAMMY Award semifinalist. The new restaurant focuses on chicken sandwiches made with Pennsylvania-sourced chicken and served on Japanese milk buns, along with shared plates, seafood options like oysters, and seasonal dishes. Japanese milk bread, known for its soft, slightly sweet, and pillowy consistency, offers a completely different experience compared to traditional sandwich buns used on other chicken sandwiches. It enhances the overall bite, balances savory components, and creates a product that feels distinct without being unfamiliar.
The owners are currently seeking city approval for 10 outdoor dining seats to complement the indoor experience. Planned operating hours are Sunday–Thursday: 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday–Saturday: 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.
