What Drivers, Parents and Students Need to Know About Monday’s King Street Construction
The project will improve bus stops, sidewalks, bicycle access and pedestrian safety near Alexandria City High School. Drivers should expect an active work zone beginning Monday.
ALEXANDRIA, VA – If your daily drive takes you along King Street near Alexandria City High School, you’ll want to slow down beginning Monday.
Construction starts July 6 on the City’s King Street Access and Safety Improvements Project, focusing on the stretch between West Braddock Road and Chinquapin Drive. While the work may temporarily affect traffic, the long-term goal is making one of Alexandria’s busiest school corridors safer and easier to navigate for everyone.
The improvements are designed with students, families, transit riders, pedestrians and cyclists in mind. According to the City of Alexandria, crews will expand two bus stops serving Alexandria City High School while upgrading pedestrian and bicycle connections throughout the area.
The project is intended to make it easier—and safer—for students who walk or bike to school, while improving access to public transportation and reducing conflicts between vehicles and people traveling on foot or by bicycle.
Drivers should expect construction activity in the area and are encouraged to use extra caution, obey posted signs, and watch for workers and pedestrians.
The work comes as Alexandria continues investing in projects that improve safety around schools and along heavily traveled corridors.
At this time, there is no timeline available to suggest when construction will be complete.
