Prepare for Flu Season: Alexandria Health Department Offering Free Shots Oct. 2
ALEXANDRIA, VA – With the arrival of fall comes flu season. According to the CDC, people 65 years or older and those with underlying medical conditions are among those at higher risk for developing serious illness. Despite the record low number of cases last year, credited to the widespread use of masks, they still recommend receiving the shot.
In an effort to ensure that the community has access to the influenza vaccine, the Alexandria Health Department is hosting a free clinic on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Hammond Middle School from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The clinic will be open to adults and children at least six months old. No insurance or proof of residency is required.
This afternoon’s Alexandria eNews bulletin states: “Because a flu shot does not protect against COVID-19, and a COVID-19 vaccine does not protect against flu, it is important to get both shots. You can get a flu shot no matter how recently you may have had a COVID-19 shot.”
The higher dose version of the flu shot for seniors will not be available at this clinic. Those in need of it can ask a pharmacist or their physician’s office.
The health department asks that attendees wear a mask over the nose and mouth at all times, and stand six feet from others.They advise not attending if you are experiencing flu or COVID-19 symptoms.
