ALEXANDRIA, VA – Mark your calendars, gather your patriotic colors and start planning to celebrate the 290th anniversary of George Washington’s birth in 2022 by watching an old-fashioned small town parade in the first president’s adopted hometown of Old Town Alexandria complete with school bands, scouts, bagpipers, community organizations and elected officials.
This year’s parade honors Alexandria’s first responders and health care workers, who will march as Grand Marshals.
The City of Alexandria, Virginia, celebrates Washington’s birthday each year with events throughout February. The highlight will be on February 21, 2022, when Alexandria residents and visitors will line the streets of Old Town Alexandria to cheer on the oldest and largest George Washington Birthday parade in the country. It starts promptly at 1 p.m. and it is recommended to be parked and in Old Town before 10-11, when many of he streets will be blocked off for parade participants. The parade features drum corps, color guards, bands, community and fraternal organizations, youth groups, local merchants, city dignitaries, and, of course, General Washington and Martha Washington.
Alexandria is a “best of” when it comes to the spectrum of sites and special events associated with General Washington. With George Washington’s Mount Vernon just eight miles south of historic Old Town, more than 140 locations in present-day Alexandria are associated with the nation’s first president who conducted business, gathered with friends, worshiped and even owned a townhouse in the city.
