Alexandria Police Department Reports Abandoned Child in Good Health

(Update 1/26 4:14 pm.) APD detectives are continuing their investigation and the child remains in CPS custody. The child’s family is assisting police in the investigation . All parties involved have been identified. APD and social workers from Child Welfare Services are working together to conduct interviews.

ALEXANDRIA, VA-At approximately 9:45 p.m. last night (Jan. 24), an abandoned child was found in front of 8 S. Van Dorn St. The child, estimated to be between one and two years old, is in good health and in the custody of Alexandria DCHS Child Welfare Services.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found that the little girl, in warm clothing, appeared healthy. No one in the area reported knowing the child or who her parents/guardians may be. Police notified Child Protective Services.

According to the APD press release, CPS cannot comment because of privacy concerns and the ongoing investigation.

Detectives have located possible video of the vehicle used by the person who left the child. They are working to identify it and its owner. They are also in communication with appropriate agencies, looking into any related missing children cases.

CPS social workers and APD detectives are interviewing family members as part of a joint investigation.
