Donors needed to help keep blood supply growing as seasons change
ALEXANDRIA, VA – Alexandria residents Gail Gordon and Vice Mayor Amy Jackson are sponsoring an INOVA Blood Donor Drive on Saturday, April 6, from 8 a.m. until noon at the Del Ray Farmers Market, 2309 Mount Vernon Avenue, in Alexandria.
One of the most common reasons people give for not donating blood is, “No one ever asked me.” This is you being asked to give.
Everyone has their own reasons for donating blood, but a few common ones include:
- Donating is a generous thing to do. It helps people in need, and it helps people in your community. When you give, others live. Every two seconds a person needs a pint of blood in this country.
- There is no substitute for blood. Donors provide the only supply of life-saving blood for those in need.
- Donating is simple, fast, and convenient. The donation process can take as little as 45 minutes of your time, but can make a lifelong difference for someone else.
If you donate blood, it will be given to someone who needs it through a transfusion. Transfusions help replace blood that is lost due to surgery or injury. Transfusions also help people with disorders that prevent them from making blood correctly. Blood transfusions are one of the most common procedures in U.S. hospitals.
You may not donate blood if you tested positive for or have HIV/AIDS, or participated in events known to increase exposure to the HIV/AIDS virus; tested positive for hepatitis B or C at any time, Hodgkin’s disease, leukemia, lymphoma or malignant melanoma. You cannot contract blood borne pathogens such as hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV/AIDS by donating blood.
I’m an Inova Blood Donor because my son spent over a week in the PICU… anything I can do to give back, I’m happy to do it ten times over,” says Jared, one of the many people who have donated blood at a recent INOVA Blood Drive.
