Alexandria School Board Approves $346M Budget
Some of the CIP's funds will go toward modernizing Cora Kelly for 291 more students
ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria City School Board has approved the Capital Improvement Program (CIP) budget for fiscal years 2026 through 2035. The budget amount is $346,037,800.
Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt praised the school board’s efforts. “This approved budget reflects our commitment to prioritizing equitable opportunities, fostering supportive learning environments, and aligning our initiatives with the district’s strategic goals,” she said.
The budget allocates $20,984,700 for FY2026.which will be mainly for essential needs not related to school capacity. In the years that follow, funding will help with capacity needs at the elementary and middle school levels. This will include modernizing the Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology. The modernization will increase space for 291 more students. It is anticipated to open in 2032.
The CIP was created to align with ACPS strategic goals, especially the kindergarten through eighth grade instructional model and redistricting initiatives. The budget also includes funds for cirriculum materials and updated textbooks, SmartBoard technology upgrades, and elevator modernization to meet the needs of students and staff with disabilities.
CIP budget funding is allocated by the City of Alexandria. The city also maintains all funding and completes related accounting. However, ACPS is given the authority to execute projects.
School Board Chair Michelle Rief thanked Dr. Kay-Wyatt and the budget planning team for their dedication.
“Your commitment to putting our students first is evident in every decision and every project you undertake,” she said. “We are excited about the progress we’ve made together and look forward to the many transformative projects on the horizon that will continue to shape a brighter future for ACPS students.”
