Councilwoman Jacinta Greene Leads Community Tribute to Matthew Gillette
Alexandrians gather in Rock Park to celebrate the life and legacy of the beloved advocate, pastor, and "40 Under 40" honoree.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — On Saturday, June 28, the Lynhaven community came together at Rock Park in Alexandria to honor the life and legacy of Matthew Ian Gillette, a beloved resident, community advocate, and spiritual leader who passed away on October 19, 2021, at the age of 39. The event, hosted by Councilwoman Jacinta Greene, served as a heartfelt celebration of Gillette’s enduring impact on Alexandria.
Gillette, who was named one of the Chamber of Commerce’s “40 Under 40” in 2018, was known for his deep commitment to service. He founded the Alexandria Gratitude Table, which provides free Thanksgiving meals to community members in need and served as the Missions and Small Group Pastor at Potomac Yard site of the National Community Church. He also co-chaired Hunger Free Alexandria and led Restore Alexandria, a nonprofit dedicated to community transformation through faith and service.
Saturday’s event brought together families, neighbors, and city leaders for a joyful afternoon filled with activities that reflected Gillette’s passion for youth, education, and community care. Highlights included a children’s book giveaway and live storytelling, fire engine tours and demonstrations by the Alexandria Fire Department, and sweet treats donated by Just Fine Donuts.
Councilwoman Greene emphasized the importance of continuing Gillette’s legacy by noting, “Matt dedicated his life to lifting others up. Whether through his work, faith, or presence, he made people feel seen, supported, and loved. Today, we honor that spirit and commit to carrying it forward.”
Gillette’s wife, Abby Hournbuckle Gillette, expressed gratitude to the community, saying, “He was a shining light in the community.”
From serving on the Cora Kelly School PTA before becoming a parent, to leading faith-based efforts that uplifted neighbors across Alexandria, Matthew Gillette’s life was a testament to servant leadership, compassion, and unity. Saturday’s gathering echoed those values—bringing people together in kindness, remembrance, and shared joy.
