Alexandria Traffic Signal Upgrades Underway on Duke Street
Smart Mobility Project Brings Real-Time Adaptive Signals to Busy Intersections

ALEXANDRIA, VA. – The City of Alexandria’s Adaptive Signal Control Cabinet Upgrade project is advancing this week, with key work scheduled at two of the city’s busiest intersections along Duke Street. The effort is part of Alexandria’s Smart Mobility Program, designed to modernize infrastructure and improve traffic flow citywide.
Crews will install new traffic signal cabinets equipped with adaptive technology that adjusts signal timing in real time based on current traffic conditions. Once fully implemented, these upgrades are expected to reduce congestion, improve travel time reliability, and keep vehicles moving more efficiently along major corridors.
What to Expect This Week
Drivers should plan ahead for temporary delays and brief signal flashes during installation at the following intersections:
- Duke Street & N. Quaker Lane – April 21
- Duke Street & S. Quaker Lane – April 23
Residents and commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time or consider alternate routes during this work. The City appreciates the community’s patience as these improvements are completed.
Stay Safe in Work Zones
Motorists are reminded to slow down and use caution when traveling through active work zones. Signs and flaggers will be present to guide traffic safely. Please follow all posted directions and remain alert to protect both workers and fellow drivers.
Travelers can check real-time traffic conditions, incidents, and work zones using VDOT’s 511 Virginia tool by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, downloading the mobile app, or calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
What Is Adaptive Signal Control?
Unlike traditional traffic signals that operate on fixed timing, adaptive signal control systems use advanced detection and management technology to respond dynamically to changing traffic patterns. These upgrades will modernize signal infrastructure along Duke Street and South Van Dorn Street, enhancing overall traffic flow and supporting a more responsive transportation network in Alexandria.

- Alexandria Commons Entrance
- Sweeley Street
- Roth Street
- Witter Street
