Starlit Garden Gala Celebrates River Farm, Honors Garden Leaders in Alexandria

Alexandria, VA – The American Horticultural Society welcomed some 200 supporters to its annual Starlit Garden Gala at River Farm in Alexandria on June 6. Co-chaired by longtime Alexandria residents Roger and Mary Bowers, the evening celebrated River Farm’s new outdoor event space and raised funds to support AHS programs and stewardship of the historic property.

AHS honored Dr. John Dole with the 2026 Liberty Hyde Bailey Award and recognized Tim Conlon, Laura Dowling, and Holly Shimizu with Meritorious Service Awards for their efforts to save River Farm. Guests enjoyed remarks from Jennifer Jewell, live music, gourmet dining, and floral displays by Holly Chapple.

Monte Durham, a longtime strong supporter of River Farm and frequent greeter at the annual AHS gala, said he believes supporting the preservation of River Farm is important for future generations to enjoy and discover. He quoted Audrey Hepburn: “To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.”
