Rebuilding Together Alexandria volunteers from the Sons of the Ameraican Legion were armed with drills and hammers, sinks and faucets to help rebuild the kitchen of a local women’s domestic violence shelter. With generous assistance from The Home Depot Foundation, which donated kitchen cabinets and a $3,000 gift card towards this volunteer project, women living in the shelter can now enjoy a more functional kitchen.

“Home Depot is proud to support Rebuilding Together Alexandria’s work to revitalize the Alexandria community by providing free repairs and modifications to facilities that help U.S. military veterans and their families. Supporting Rebuilding Together reflects the commitment of our organization to the communities in which we serve,” stated Courtney Smith, Team Depot senior specialist, The Home Depot Foundation.

“Enlisting the help of volunteers and Home Depot to make the facility’s kitchen safe and more operational was much-needed since more than 100 women and their children each year are served by this shelter. By improving the conditions of the facilities that serve vulnerable people, we hope the residents remain active members of their neighborhood and in turn help our city remain economically, socially and culturally diverse,” shared Katharine Dixon, president and CEO, Rebuilding Together Alexandria.

Since the first Home Depot store opened, giving back has been a core value of the company and a passion for its associates. Each year, The Home Depot associates volunteer more than 100,000 through Team Depot, the company’s associate-led volunteer force, to give back in the communities it serves.

Rebuilding Together Alexandria is one of 157 affiliates nationwide. With the help of funders and dedicated volunteers, the nonprofit creates and preserves housing affordability by providing low- and moderate-income Alexandria homeowners with free safe and healthy home repairs.  To date, in-kind donations of labor and materials have resulted in $7 million worth of value on more than 1,800 properties.
