ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Police Department (APD) is reporting a new phone scam in and around the city. There is someone calling people using the false identity of an Alexandria police employee for the purpose of extortion.
If you receive a call, the individual says that there are warrants for your arrest. Next, instructions are given on how to pay a large sum of money. Then your call is forwarded to another person who explains a “surety voucher.”
APD does not make these kinds of calls, and the department will never ask for money by phone. They advise that if you receive the scam call to hang up immediately. Do not answer any questions.
