ALEXANDRIA, VA – Barbara Muth has been a professional artist since 2008. Her new exhibition at The Art League Gallery called “My Body, Shamed” is a collection of artwork that is both striking and intimate. It is on display now through September 6.
She brings her own experience with body image to a wider audience. The fact that she studied psychology in college influences how she expresses emotion in her paintings
A press release states that “Muth also references the experiences of other women to illustrate the complicated relationship between body and mind, and the effects of family dynamics on self-image.”
The artist paints on large canvases, full of vibrant color that attract the eye immediately. She employs stylized figures to tell a brief story.
Her creativity is fueled by the enjoyment she receives from people interpreting her work. She also hopes the art speaks to viewers dealing with body shaming and gives them the message that they are not alone.
“You can get through it,” she said. “I am a very happy, content person these days.”
Prior to opening ArtBlitz Studios in Sterling last year, she kept a studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center.
The Art League Gallery, Inc., a nonprofit founded in 1954, is one of the country’s oldest and largest mult-service organizations for visual artists. Hours of operation are Wednesday to Sunday, 12-4 p.m. It is located at 105 N. Union Street.
There is a limit of 10 visitors at a time. Masks are required inside. Temperature checks are conducted upon entry.
