On April 10, Dorothy and Chet Nagle hosted an event for The Hospitality and Information Service for Diplomats (THIS for Diplomats). Their historic residence, the Peake-Fairfax House, is a Federal-period townhouse that was built by William Garner in 1816 and lived in by Humphrey Peake, Collector of the Port, a federal officer who was in charge of the collection of import duties on foreign goods that entered the United States by ship.

Peake’s father, Humprey Peake Sr., owned the plantation next to Mt. Vernon.

The house, which was occupied by Dr. Orlando Fairfax, son of the 6th Lord Fairfax, is furnished with antiques and period paintings and many treasures. With eight original fireplaces and many fine architectural features of the Federal period, it has been restored with attention to detail making the property one of the finest historic examples in Old Town Alexandria.

THIS for Diplomats, started in 1961 at the request of the Chief of Protocol of the United States, promotes international understanding and friendship through exchanges with members of the diplomatic community in the Washington, DC area.
