Joining three-time Emmy-winning host Steve Houk is Tom Rush, a six decades-long highly gifted musician, songwriter, performer and major influencer, whose journey into the tradition and spectrum of what music has been, can be, and will become has been utterly remarkable. Rush’s impact on the American music scene has been profound, he helped shape the folk revival in the ’60s and the folk renaissance of the ’80s and ’90s, and his music has left its stamp on generations of artists. James Taylor told Rolling Stone, “Tom was not only one of my early heroes, but also one of my main influences,” and country music superstar Garth Brooks, who makes a brief video appearance on the show wishing Tom a happy birthday, has credited Rush with being one of his top five musical influences as well.

Rush has also long championed emerging artists, his recordings introduced the world to the work of revered songwriters like Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Jackson Browne, whose songs he included on several of his early records after meeting them and bonding musically.

“Here were these three fabulous songwriters, all of a sudden just falling into my lap,” Rush, who just turned 80 and survived contracting COVID-19 last year, recalls. “I loved their songs, they were different, but not so different that they were alien. I loved ‘em, and I thought OK, let’s do this.”

In more recent years, his Club 47® concerts at Boston’s Symphony Hall have brought artists such as Nanci Griffith, Shawn Colvin and other top artists to wider audiences when they were just beginning to build their own reputations.
