Alexandria Councilman Kirk McPike Resigns, Clearing Way for House of Delegates Run

ALEXANDRIA, VA – During a virtual session of the Alexandria City Council on Tuesday night, Councilman Kirk McPike tendered his resignation, officially clearing the way for his campaign for the Virginia House of Delegates seat in District 5.

Councilman John Chapman shared the news on social media while the meeting was still in session.

McPike, a two-term Alexandria City Council member first elected in 2021, recently won the Democratic firehouse primary for House District 5, earning his party’s nomination to fill the seat vacated by Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker.

In the special election scheduled for Tuesday, February 10, 2026, McPike will face Republican candidate Mason Butler, who was selected as the GOP nominee for the District 5 seat.

McPike has made local housing affordability, transportation, climate action, and community engagement central themes of his campaign, telling supporters he hopes to bring Alexandria’s perspective to Richmond and advocate for Alexandrians at the state level.

McPike’s resignation clears the way for the upcoming special election but also triggers another vacancy on City Council. Two local leaders, Sandy Marks and Tim Laderach have already announced their intentions to compete for McPike’s soon-to-be-opened council seat in the coming days
