Alexandria, VA – Aging in place is something that a lot of older adults aspire to—living in the home where we raised our families, where we know our neighbors, and where we feel comfortable. The reality is that not everyone is able to age in place and learning what other options are available can be scary.

It is often difficult to know when to make a change in our living situation. There are many reasons that people choose to move into senior living communities. Some move because they are lonely and want to be around other older adults. Other seniors may have difficulty maintaining their home or need help with daily tasks. Still others move because their family can’t provide a safe environment or proper medical care.

We owe it to ourselves to learn more about the various housing options available to older adults before it is time to make that decision. It is also important to know what resources are available if aging in place is the option we choose.

Senior Services of Alexandria’s (SSA) February 20th Speaker Series will focus on senior housing options, what to consider before you move, and how to downsize and declutter at a pace that is comfortable with your lifestyle. If remaining in your own home is the goal, there will be presentations on low-cost changes you can make to keep you safe and secure there. Attendees will hear from Alexandria City officials on programs available to help seniors stay in their homes.

Goodwin House Alexandria will present information about the many types of senior living communities: independent and assisted living communities, nursing homes, and continuing care retirement communities, and what services each includes based on their residents’ lifestyle and health care needs.

Atlas Services, a premier leader in downsizing, smart-sizing, and organizing, will discuss how they transition seniors from a lifelong residence to new housing with care, kindness, and in an economical manner.

AARP will present its Home Fit program, a common-sense guide to practical modifications that can be made to your home so you can age in place. The Alexandria Office on Housing will share information about subsidized housing, home modification programs, homeownership assistance programs, and more housing-related subjects.

The workshop takes place on Thursday, February 20, 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon (with registration and refreshments at 9:30 a.m.) at Beatley Central Library, 5005 Duke Street, Alexandria. It is free and open to the public. There will be an open question and answer period and literature from the various presenting organizations. We ask that you RSVP for this event either online at seniorservicesalex.org or call 703-836-4414, ext. 110.

This will be a very informative session that can help you make informed decisions about where and how you want to live!
