RiverRenew Community Listening Sessions to Gather Input on Locations of Proposed Tunnels

From Monday, September 17 through Tuesday, September 25, Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew) will host a series of four community listening sessions to solicit feedback on locations for the proposed tunnels to remediate Alexandria’s combined sewer outfalls. Formerly referred to as Option B+ in the Long Term Control Plan Update and the Alexandria Wet Weather Program, the program was recently renamed “RiverRenew.”

The RiverRenew team will be on hand to discuss the program, answer your questions, and receive your comments. One of the listening sessions will also be the Agency and Public Scoping Meeting for the Environmental Assessment process and will be in conjunction with the National Park Service. The public is invited to attend any or all of the community events below. Details are as follows:

Advancing the concept recommended by the 2018 Long Term Control Plan Update, RiverRenew will prevent millions of gallons of sewage mixed with rainwater from being discharged to Alexandria’s waterways. The program features a new tunnel system coupled with upgrades to AlexRenew’s Water Resource Recovery Facility to capture and treat the discharges from Alexandria’s four existing combined sewer outfalls during rain events. These listening sessions are intended to bring the community up to speed on the proposed tunnel routes and facility locations, solicit feedback, and optimize the design to minimize community impacts.

Please note that the RiverRenew community listening sessions are not related to the City’s Stormwater Management Program. For more information on that program, including information on upcoming public meetings, visit alexandriava.gov/Stormwater.
