ALEXANDRIA, VA – City of Alexandria winter weather preparations are underway as rain and snow are expected to move into the region tomorrow. City officials say they are actively monitoring conditions and are ready to respond to keep residents safe.

As part of the prep, City of Alexandria winter weather preparations, road crews will deploy early Sunday morning. Teams will work in 12-hour shifts to treat and clear streets. Crews will continue operating around the clock until conditions improve and travel becomes safe.

In addition to full-time City staff, Alexandria partners with local contractors to strengthen its winter response efforts. This coordinated approach ensures equipment, staffing, and materials are ready when needed.

Why You May Not See Road Pre-Treatment

Because this storm is expected to begin with rain followed by wet snow, crews may not pre-treat roads in advance. Rain would wash away brine applications, making them ineffective. Instead, snow and ice removal operations will begin as conditions change.

How Residents Can Support Winter Weather Preparations

Residents play an important role in the City of Alexandria’s winter weather preparations. If you have a driveway, please use it. Moving vehicles off the streets gives plows more room to clear roadways quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, residents can support neighbors through Volunteer Alexandria’s Snow Buddy program, which helps clear sidewalks and driveways for those unable to do so themselves.
