ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) has completed its work at the scene of the overnight fire on Wheeler Ave. The three alarm blaze began around 10 p.m. last night (Jan. 2), affecting three buildings on the street’s industrial section. The fire was extinguished by 11 p.m., with firefighters staying on the scene to watch for hot spots through this morning.

One firefighter sustained a minor injury, was treated at INOVA Alexandria Hospital, and released.

“The incident, initially reported as a fire alarm at 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, quickly escalated, with heavy flames observed through the roof of the building [at 4407 Wheeler Ave.], reads an Alexandria eNews bulletin. “The intense flames brought over 100 firefighters from AFD and surrounding jurisdictions to support the fire attack activities.”

The other buildings affected are located at 4413 and 4411 Wheeler Ave. Structural engineers have investigated the building at 4407 Wheeler and say it is unsafe to enter. The investigation into the fire will continue tomorrow, and engineers will decide when entry will be permitted. The city did not provide information related to the other addresses.

The city says updates on the incident will be released as they become available.
