Major Northbound I-395 Lane Closures This Weekend

This weekend, the Virginia Department of Transportation will continue major closures of the general purpose lanes of I-395 in Virginia between the Springfield Interchange and the Washington, D.C., line. The third of six scheduled closures will be in effect from 10 p.m. on Friday, August 3, through the afternoon of Sunday, August 5. This weekend’s closures will affect the northbound lanes.

The scheduled closures are part of coordinated bridge work related to both the 395 Express Lanes project and rehabilitation of the Four Mile Run bridge.

During this weekend’s work:

  • At least two northbound lanes will remain open during the day; travel may be reduced to one open northbound general purpose lane overnight.
  • The HOV lanes will remain open northbound for through traffic during the work.
  • The entrance ramps to I-395 general purpose lanes at Seminary Road and Shirlington Circle will be closed to northbound 395 traffic and detours will be in place; local traffic is advised to use an alternate route. Access to the northbound HOV lanes from Seminary Road and Shirlington Circle will be available for all traffic heading to the Pentagon and Washington, D.C.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes for through traffic, including northbound HOV lanes. Those who must travel the corridor should plan for extra travel time, obey all signage and otherwise exercise caution.

The 395 Express Lanes, a project of the Virginia Department of Transportation and Transurban, are expected to open to traffic in late 2019.

The lanes will extend the current lanes eight miles north to the D.C. line. For
