ALEXANDRIA, VA – The cats at the Alexandria Animal Shelter are enjoying gourmet meals this week, thanks to a major donation from Birdie & Louie. As part of a nationwide campaign, the company is donating 2 million cans of its ultra-premium cat food to 100 animal shelters across the country—and Alexandria made the list.

The generous gift was announced Tuesday via social media and has already made a noticeable difference in the lives of the shelter’s feline residents.

“We received a generous donation of canned cat food from Birdie & Louie!” the shelter shared. “We’re spreading the good mews! 🐱 Thank you to Birdie & Louie for donating 4 pallets of cat food — 31,104 cans in total — to Alexandria’s animals!”

The Alexandria shelter is one of 100 shelters across the U.S. that received some of the 2 million cans of food they donated countrywide.

Birdie & Louie, known for its human-grade, gourmet cat food, launched the campaign to support overburdened shelters and bring attention to the importance of proper feline nutrition. Their mission? To feed cats like family—whether they’re in loving homes or waiting to find one.

“Shelters are overwhelmed right now,” said Steve Ball, co-founder of Birdie & Louie. “We want to help lighten their load and make sure cats are getting the best possible care, even before they find their forever homes.”

The donation couldn’t come at a better time. Like many facilities, Alexandria Animal Shelter has seen a seasonal surge in intakes. The extra food helps ensure cats stay nourished and healthy while waiting for adoption—while also freeing up shelter resources for other critical needs.

The Alexandria Animal Shelter expressed heartfelt appreciation to Birdie & Louie and encouraged locals to support businesses that give back to the animal welfare community.
