ALEXANDRIA, VA-This morning (Nov.3), Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS released information on its Capital Improvement Project budget of $313,957,900, which will be used in part to modernize some school buildings and address capacity. The amount will be used during FY 2025 – FY 2034.

In June, the school board adopted the FY 2024 Combined Funds Budget of $361.9 million.

“We have made a strong commitment to cultivating a bright instructional future for our community, and our learning environments and facilities are vital to this priority,” said Superintendent Dr. Melanie Kay-Wyatt. “This proposed budget, which is in line with our projected capacity needs for years to come, is a testament to our dedication to providing ample room and flexibility to support student growth, learning and opportunity.”

The budget will help with the following: the modernization of George Mason Elementary, capital investment planning for Cora Kelly, improvement of the school system’s bus facility, playground and sports field upgrades, and the continuation of updates to HVAC systems.

Over the last ten years, ACPS has secured $558.9 million in CIP funds,  which aided in the redevelopment of Minnie Howard and the transformation of 1703 N. Beauregard into a swing space.

Funding for the budget is allocated by the city. After projects are approved by the school board, ACPS is given the go ahead by the city to begin. The city monitors the funds and handles all accounting duties.

A public hearing has been scheduled for Nov. 13 at 6:30 p.m., at which time the community can share their thhoughts about the budget with the school board before adoption on Dec. 13.
