Community Supporters to be Honored by Volunteer Alexandria During April 27 Ceremony

Mary Wadland, Publisher of The Zebra Press, named Business Leader of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, VA-Today (April 19), Volunteer Alexandria announced the residents and business it plans to honor for their contributions over the last year. The honorees will be recognized at the Volunteers are the Heart of Alexandria Awards Brunch Ceremony on Saturday, April 27.

The honorees are:

Kendra Burlingame, recipient of the Joan White Grassrotts Volunteer Service Award. This award is presented to volunteers affiliated with Alexandria/Arlington CASA, who advocate for children. The announcement calls Burlingame “a fierce champion for children facing academic challenges and struggles in school.”

Mary Emerick, Laura Robertson, and Mary Beth Cockerham, recipients of the RSVP Volunteer Service Award. This is given to volunteers 55 years and older who use their skills to make a difference in the community. All three honorees serve with Capital Caring Health, whose mission is to provide care with compassion to people with advanced illness.

Tricia Rodgers, recipient of the Marian Van Landingham Lifetime Achievement Award. This is given to an individual who has continuously served the Alexandria community. According to the announcement, “Ms. Rodgers has been a consistent advocate for economic security and health equity her entire life, using policy, systems change, and programs to make a difference. ”

Maddy Sleeter, recipient of the Youth Service Volunteer Award. It is presented to an individual, 12 to 18, who selflessly gives his or her time and dedication to help further the mission of a community organization. Sleeter volunteers with Friends of the Mt. Vernon Trail each week. As a result of her commitment, she was named the first Youth Volunteer Leader in the organization’s history.
