Shirlington Artist’s Work Selected for The Arts Club of Washington’s April Show

And now for something entirely different… One of my gorgeous, talented and smart Shirlington Village Condominium neighbors, Dr. Amy Flatten, was chosen along with two other featured artists to show her exciting and stunningly beautiful (yes, that’s my opinion!) artwork in The Arts Club of Washington’s current Gallery Show, opening this Friday, April 7, with a reception from 6:30- 8:30 pm.
Dr. Flatten, who is Director of International Affairs for a scientific organization in the D.C. area, has chosen artwork for this show that ranges in size from 28” x 21” to 33” x 41.”
She says that she combines technical analysis and artistic intuition when creating her abstract pieces and that her years of scientific training have inevitably informed her artwork. She creates her pieces intuitively, sometimes straying from her anticipated outcome by incorporating texture through the use of different palette knives, while smoothing and softening areas with damp brushes. She believes that layering the paint reveals hidden objects and lines and reveals new findings in an often-viewed piece.
There will be brief remarks from all three artists, including Mimi Little and Thomas Xenakis beginning at 7:15 pm. The show is in the historic James Monroe House and in the Monroe and MacFeely Galleries located at 2017 I Street, NW, Washington, DC. It will and run through April 29.
