Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Opens New Shop on King Street in Alexandria

Alexandria, VA – The New York-based chain Van Leeuwen Ice Cream opened on June 18 at 400 King St. The sweet shop joins the recently opened Life Alive café, both sharing space with the Alexandrian Old Town Hotel.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream originated in New York as a food truck in 2008 and features custard-style ice cream and vegan confections. The ice cream is referred to as French Ice Cream as it contains almost twice as many egg yolks as other ice creams. Their signature products are made from milk, cream, eggs, and cane sugar. Flavors change regularly but many familiar tastes such as strawberry, vanilla bean, and mint chip are usually available. The honeycomb ice cream is not made with honeycomb but with caramel candy.
Vegan flavors feature coconuts, cashews, and oats. Some of their vegan flavors include Banana Bread Pudding with Fudge Swirls and Chocolate Cookie Dough Honeycomb made with creamy chocolate oat milk ice cream, chunks of chewy cookie dough, and gooey honeycomb candy. Per their website, their mission and values are “to make good ice cream that makes you feel good. Because a life without anything good is bad.”
Additional products include ice cream bars and sandwiches, floats, sundaes, 14 oz. containers, and chocolate chip cookies. Van Leeuwen Ice Cream is available in most grocery stores in the Washington, D.C., area and for local delivery.
