ALEXANDRIA, VA – Inova Health System announced this morning that Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital (IMVH) is adding a Critical Illness Recovery Hospital (CIRH) that they said “will be built within the current footprint” of IMVH. A CIRH treats patients who need specialized clinical care, but during their extended stay, no longer require intensive care.

Staffed by a physician-led specialty care team, the CIRH will care for patients with heart failure, burn wounds, severe brain injuries, and respiratory issues.

Expected to be fully operational by late 2022, the hospital will address this void of care in our area.

“The absence […] has previously required patients to be transferred to facilities in Charlottesville, Richmond, or DC – far away from their families,” said J. Stephen Jones, MD, President and CEO of Inova. “With the addition of the CIRH at IMVH, all five Inova hospitals will be able to confidently transition patients to an Inova facility closer to home for this expert care.”

“The CIRH will allow patients to continue in Inova’s seamless continuum of care and will allow for easier communication among patients and the care team, as well as the development of specialized programs and services to better treat patients,” said the president of Mt. Vernon Hospital Roberta Tinch.

The CIRH is an important part of Inova’s plan to fully build out its healthcare delivery system. As a result, Inova will expand its services in Northern Virginia, which includes Alexandria and surrounding communities.

Recently, Inova also announced a formal request to the Commonwealth of Virginia to add 20 behavioral health beds to address a critical community need for additional inpatient care.
