ALEXANDRIA, VA – For the tenth consecutive period, the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office has earned accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). The Sheriff’s Office was formally recognized at the organization’s fall conference Nov. 18 and 19 in St. Louis. They also were presented with a distinction of merit for earning accreditation for 15-plus years, achieving it for the first time in 1990.

“We are committed to providing Alexandria top quality law enforcement services and I’m thrilled to see that CALEA – the gold standard in public safety – has found that we are in full compliance with their high standards,” said Sheriff Sean Casey. “Our deputies and professional staff are extremely proud to serve our community and our community should take pride in knowing that the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office reflects the gold standard benchmark established by CALEA.”

CALEA’s Advanced Law Enforcement Program, in which the Sheriff’s Office participates,  ” is specifically designed for elite organizations striving to demonstrate professional excellence within a comprehensive range of operational and administrative functional responsibilities,” according to CALEA’s website.

During the reaccreditation process this past April, CALEA conducted a virtual assessment, which included a review of Sheriff’s Office policies, proceedures, and much more. At the end of the process, CALEA found the Office to be in “complete compliance,” according to a press release. The organization wrote in an audit report: “[I]n many ways, the agency appears to be a model of how to operate a modern-day law enforcement agency, especially in the area of community engagement and court security.”

In addition to the virtual assessment, CALEA has monitored the Office for the past four years, applying more than 400 standards to help evaluate its compliance.

The Sheriff’s Office is also accredited by the American Correctional Association (ACA) and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care (NCCHC) and is certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services and the Virginia Department of Corrections.

The law enforcement agency is tasked with operating the Truesdale Adult Detention Center, managing courthouse security, transporting prisoners, and serving legal process and warrants.

This report has been updated. The original incorrectly listed accreditation periods as years. According to the Sheriff’s Office, CALEA’s period of accreditation varies, but normally last three to for years.
