ALEXANDRIA, VA-The Alexandria Health Department has created a new program called ALX Breathes to help residents who deal with asthma and COPD.

By enrolling in ALX Breathes, people living in houses or apartments can receive individualized help from AHD staff. During home visits, they will locate triggers such as mold, pests, smoking, and ventilation issues. It is important to know that these visits are not code inspections. The aim of the program is to help you breathe easier.

Through this free program – available to Spanish speakers as well – participants receive cleaning supplies at no cost, service referrals, educational resources, and coaching. By the end of a six-month period, AHD says that “participants can better manage their breathing.”

If interested, fill out the eligibility form HERE or call 703-746-4988. Eligibility requirements are listed below:

  • Must live in Alexandria
  • Meet certain income requirements
  • Have a diagnosis of asthma or COPD

Even people determined non-eligible can still receive some assistance by phone, primarily on how to manage asthma triggers in the home.

The program is made possible through the Healthy Homes Initiative, a collaborative effort between various city departments, community organizations, landlords, tenants and homeowners. [SEE ALSO: City of Alexandria Wins Award for Equity Index Map]
