New owner, fresh look, lighter menu — but don't worry, the coconut cake stays

Alexandria, VA – The next adventure in the life of Old Town Alexandria’s revered Art Deco-styled restaurant, The Majestic at 911 King Street, will be unveiled on April 10 by new owner and long-time Chef Santiago Lopez.

“I love The Majestic,” said Lopez. He’s been the executive chef partner with Alexandria Restaurant Partners since its beginning, 16 years ago, and has helped to open all nine of the ARP restaurants. He’s delighted to have had the opportunity to buy ownership of The Majestic from ARP.

In a conversation with The Zebra Press, Chef Lopez said, “All the loved classics at The Majestic, such as the now famous coconut cake, will remain on the menu.”  That coconut cake has been a mainstay since it became the winning recipe entry in a 2009 bake off.

With the warm hospitality Chef Lopez is known for, he also plans to blend classics, including Sunday Supper and Saturday specials such as porter house steaks, along with what today’s patrons tend to prefer by offering revamped and flavorful and lighter meals.

Inside, a remodeling is underway that will include an organized display of many of the historic photos that have long been part of the décor, some from the 1930s, with fresh background wall colors and bold artwork.

The classically French-trained chef noted that he greatly enjoys coaching the younger staff members and line cooks as well as being able to depend on experienced members of his team.

For spring through fall there is also an inviting outdoor dining area where you can enjoy the weather in the shadow of the historic and iconic Majestic neon exterior sign.

The revamped menu spans everything from Saffron P.E.I. Mussels and Lobster Pot Pie to Mushroom Risotto, Roasted Lamb Shank, and beloved staples like the Majestic Burger and Steak Frites, while new service offerings include lunch, weekend brunch, and weekday happy hour featuring dishes like Chicken and Waffles, Smoked Salmon Benedict, and specially priced small plates. The cocktail program matches the food’s ambition, with creative signatures like a Saffron Spritz and Margarita Alla Caipirinha alongside an extensive wine and spirits list.

Reflecting Chef Lopez’s vision, the redesigned space incorporates a palette of hunter green, gold, and burgundy, featuring custom murals, art deco-inspired patterns, framed wallpaper panels, and curated artwork throughout — including a ceiling mural in the foyer and a vintage mirror at the bar sourced from a neighboring King Street business — while even the stairways and restrooms have been elevated with floral wall coverings, marble-topped vanities, brass fixtures, and bespoke lighting from small businesses.

The Majestic is open Monday–Friday 11:30 a.m.–11 p.m., Saturday–Sunday 10 a.m.–11 p.m. Weekend brunch will be served Saturdays and Sundays 10 a.m.–3 p.m., and Happy Hour Monday–Friday, 3–7 p.m. Address: 911 King St, Alexandria, VA 22314. Phone: (703) 837-9117. https://www.themajesticva.com/

I’m excited to see The Majestic return! Having worked in the hotel sector, I understand how crucial it is for a location to retain its ambiance while growing with the times. The new menu seems appealing, and I’m especially pleased slope free to learn about the emphasis on local ingredients. It’s wonderful when eateries support their community!
