Kerry J. Donley Honored With Naming of ACHS Athletic Field Complex
ALEXANDRIA, VA—The athletic field at Alexandria City High School’s Minnie Howard Campus has officially been named the Kerry J. Donley Athletic Field Complex, honoring the late Alexandria mayor and longtime champion of the city’s public schools.
Community members and members of the Donley family gathered for a naming ceremony on Sept. 1.
Donley served as Alexandria’s mayor from 1996 to 2003 and remained deeply involved in the community after leaving elected office. He later served as athletic director at the city’s public high school, then known as T.C. Williams High School.
ACPS credited Donley with helping advance several major school construction projects, including Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School and expansions of George Washington Middle School, Francis C. Hammond Middle School and T.C. Williams, now Alexandria City High School.
The field complex was one of four school division facilities approved for commemorative naming by the Alexandria City School Board in December 2025. The designation recognizes Donley’s contributions to Alexandria and its students.
Donley and his wife raised five daughters who attended Alexandria City Public Schools and participated in interscholastic sports, including soccer, field hockey and crew.
Donley died in July 2022 at age 66. In its announcement, ACPS said his legacy “has left a lasting impact on Alexandria.”
The Minnie Howard Campus is located at 3801 West Braddock Road.
