ALEXANDRIA, VA-Yesterday evening, the City of Alexandria announced that Don Hayes has been appointing Acting Police Chief with the Alexandria Police Department. Selected by City Manager Mark B. Jinks, he will assume the role on June 25, upon the retirement of Chief Michael L. Brown.

“Chief Hayes’ 40 years of experience leading various aspects of the Alexandria Police Department and long-standing connection to the community make him the right choice for this Acting Police Chief role,” said Jinks.

Hayes joined the APD in 1981 and achieved the rank of sergeant in 1996, overseeing the community-oriented policing and internal investigations sections. In 1999 he attained the rank of lieutenant, the rank of captain in 2013, and assistant chief in 2019. With his experience, he is now overseeing all parts of the department.

As an Alexandria resident for 30 years, Hayes is an integral part of the community. He works with youth in various programs and assists previous offenders in rebuilding their lives. He is also the lead pastor at Oakland Baptist Church.

Hayes is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. Throughout his career, he has earned numerous awards and distinctions. Hayes is an active member of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, and the FBI National Academy Associates.
