ALEXANDRIA, VA — Alexandria Women for Good presented a $13,973 grant to the Alexandria Tutoring Consortium during a “big check” presentation on April 30, helping expand tutoring and literacy support for Alexandria students.

The nonprofit was nominated by member Eleanor Trice through Alexandria Women for Good’s quarterly “Gather & Grant” process. Each quarter, members who contribute to the giving circle nominate local nonprofits, then vote on which organization will receive the pooled community grant funding.

Trice, who volunteers with ATC’s Book Buddies reading program, said she has seen firsthand how literacy support can change young students’ lives.

“I love watching my students grow—building confidence while benefiting from the evidence-based tutoring methods used in ATC’s Book Buddies program,” Trice said. “The relationships I’ve built with first-graders and kindergarteners over the years have been incredibly special. I’m excited that, with the AWFG grant, ATC can share more books and reach even more students this summer.”

According to Alexandria Tutoring Consortium, volunteer tutors now work with approximately 300 students across all 14 Alexandria public elementary schools, helping struggling readers build literacy skills and confidence.

“I’ve been privileged to watch ATC expand its reach until our community tutors are now in all 14 of Alexandria’s public elementary schools helping struggling readers become confident ones,” said Mary Ann Solomon, an ATC board member. “We’re kind of like the little engine that could in that these volunteers work with 300 kids putting them on the path to success and with this grant, we’ll be able to reach even more next year. We are so thankful to AWFG for helping us make that happen.”

Alexandria Women for Good brings together women throughout Alexandria for networking, service, friendship, and philanthropy. In addition to quarterly grants, the organization hosts monthly happy hours, luncheons, and volunteer opportunities aimed at strengthening local connections while supporting community nonprofits.

The organization is currently working to close the gap toward a $15,000 fundraising goal for its next grant cycle and is encouraging additional women to join the giving circle.

Its next Gather & Grant event will take place Thursday, May 7, at 6 p.m. at Founders Hall in Old Town Alexandria. The event is open to women interested in learning more about the organization, meeting other community members, and hearing directly from local nonprofits competing for the next quarterly grant award.
