ALEXANDRIA, VA – First Night Alexandria (FNA) is looking for new board members. Candidates must “live, work, or play in Alexandria,” according to a recent email sent out by the organization. The purpose of the Board of Directors is to celebrate the performing arts in the city.

Heard of Alexandria’s famous New Year’s Eve celebration? An Alexandria institution for 27 years, the big party (also called First Night Alexandria) draws huge crowds every year (pre-covid, of course) with live music, great food, and a fantastic fireworks show. By becoming a board member, you can take part in the planning!

“We are always looking for new people to get involved with First Night Alexandria,” Marilyn Patterson, the executive director of FNA told The Zebra. ” We desire that our Board reflects the diversity of our community – age, gender, ethnicity, etc. – so that our programming excels at promoting the lively arts in a way that broadens and deepens our collective appreciation for the arts.”

It is clear that Board members do much more than plan New Year’s Eve. In fact, they help all year long.  Currently, they are working to increase opportunities to showcase the arts by producing additional events throughout the year with input from the community.

“The objective,” said Patterson, “is to expand FNA’s geographical and chronological footprint throughout the city with a goal to contribute to a more vibrant performing arts culture.”

For 2022, FNA is focused on finding emerging artists and rising stars.

The Board has 18 members. Every March the Nominating Committee recommends indiviudals for consideration. However, selection can take place anytime throughout the year. Each candidate is vetted during an informal interview to determine level of interest, since FNA consists of all volunteers. He or she is also given the chance to talk with the executive director before being introduced to the Board for final consideration.

Members serve two-year terms and are allowed to serve up to three consecutive terms. FNA’s fiscal year runs from April 1 to March 30.
