BEWARE: Coastal Warning Says Biggest Flood in 20 Years Could Befall Alexandria
ALEXANDRIA, VA – This afternoon the National Weather Service issued a coastal flood warning is in effect until Saturday, October 30, 2021 at 2 p.m., and Alexandria could be in the way.
The most water is expected Friday and Saturday.
Factors include the height of the tide in Alexandria when the storm blows in Friday. The expected primary impact is to the Alexandria waterfront from the Potomac River up King Street to Lee Street, and along Union Street between Duke Street and Queen Street.
“While this specific weather event is not expected to have the same effects throughout the city or in other historic areas, a Flood Watch has been issued for the region on Friday, October 29 through the afternoon, with isolated areas receiving 2 to 4 possible inches of rainfall that may cause creeks and streams to slowly rise,” says the City in a Friday evening press release.
Free Sandbags
The City will provide free sandbags to residents and businesses Friday, October 29, from 7 to 9 a.m. at 133 S. Quaker Lane. Sandbags will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, with a limit of five sandbags per address. Proof of either residency or business in Alexandria is required. Please wear a mask when picking up the sandbags and review guidance for proper use of sandbags.
City crews inspect and clear debris from streets and curb inlets in advance of the storm; residents and businesses can help by clearing leaves and debris from around gutters and storm drains on their respective properties. Property owners are urged to take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property; if you must travel, then do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth.
