ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Transit Company (DASH) is seeking feedback from the community about proposed Title VI policies. Title VI is part of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, it “prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin in any program or activity that receives Federal funds or other Federal financial assistance.”

A community meeting will take place next Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. To register for the webinar, click HERE. A public hearing at the DASH Board of Directors meeting will follow on Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. To register for that webinar, click HERE.

DASH wrote in a newsletter that the proposed policies “are designed to ensure that DASH bus service is provided in a fair and equitable manner, and that any major changes to DASH service or fare policies are evaluated to ensure that any impacts borne from the changes are distributed equitably.”

The following indicators will be used to evaluate performance:

!) Vehicle load
2) Vehicle headways
3)On-time performance
4) Service availability

DASH also plans to monitor vehicle assignments and passenger amenities to prevent discrimination. They strive to give all Alexandrians access to the best buses, shelters, and more.

A document titled Official Company Policy states that any service discrepancies found to exist between minority and non-minority groups will be evaluated. “If the negative effect on minority persons is proportionally higher than the effect on non-minority persons, additional steps may be necessary to address or mitigate any impacts that might result from the discrepancy.”

DASH invites those interested to review the complete document prior to the meetings.

The deadline for public comment is Friday, Feb. 25.
