Noted Women’s Activist Heather Booth to Speak at Alexandria’s 38th Salute to Women Awards

Noted political activist Heather Booth will be in town as the keynote speaker for Alexandria Commission for Women’s “38th Salute to Women Awards: The Future is Female”!

Alexandria, VA – If you are going for a jolt of genuine gritty inspiration, then you reach for a leader who has been in the trenches fighting for women since shortly after emerging from the womb. Noted political activist Heather Booth will be in town as the keynote speaker for Alexandria Commission for Women’s “38th Salute to Women Awards: The Future is Female” event at the Lyceum, March 23, 2020, starting at 6 pm.

Booth, whose life is the subject of a 2016 documentary, Heather Booth: Changing the World, is an American civil rights activist, feminist, and political strategist. A distinguished speaker and civil rights organizer since before the women’s movements of the 1960s, Booth was a student at the University of Chicago when she joined the 1964 Mississippi Freedom Project in the campaign for black voting rights.

Booth was active in the founding of the Chicago Women’s Liberation Union, and Action Committee for Decent Childcare, and setting up the first campus women’s liberation organization.

Following the speaker there will be an awards ceremony celebrating Alexandria’s outstanding women and youth who have made a significant impact on women and girls in Alexandria.

Proceeds from the reception will support the Sexual Assault Center and the Domestic Violence Program in Alexandria, and other programs which support women and girls in leadership positions.
