Alexandria, VA – Governor Ralph S. Northam (D-VA) announced in Richmond today that he will allow Northern Virginia to begin Phase One of his “Forward Virginia” plan this Friday, May 29.

This phase permits some of the restrictions in place to be eased. But it is stressed that residents should adopt the “Safer at Home” strategy. It maintains the ban on gatherings of no more than 10 people, keeps social distancing practices, and promotes using a face mask when in public.

In fact, the signing of Executive Order 63 means that starting Friday, Virginians will be required to wear a mask in indoor public settings. There are exceptions to the order that pertain to children younger than 10 years old, people with breathing problems, and when eating or drinking.

Any person who declines to wear a mask in public for medical reasons is not required to produce documentation stating his or her condition. Nor will the personal be required to identify the condition.

“We are making progress to contain the spread of COVID-19 and now is not the time for Virginians to get complacent,” said Northam. “Science shows that face coverings are an effective way to prevent transmission of the virus, but wearing them is also a sign of respect. ”

He added that when someone wears a mask, it helps protect others.

Alexandria Recreation to Follow Governor’s Lead

The city has announced reopening phases for programs and services offered by the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities (RPCA). Click HERE for a helpful chart detailing the phases.

The RPCA phases should align with the phases in the “Forward Virginia” plan. However, that is subject to change.

Programs and facilities will operate according to federal, state, and local health guidelines. This includes making significant adjustments to capacity and format. There will be fewer participants than usual during the first two phases in summer camps. The same applies to classes, pools, fitness rooms, and more.

Some facility amenities will remain closed until it is safe to reopen according to guidelines. Click  HERE for reopening updates and related information.

Meal Distribution

On Thursday, May 28 at 5 p.m., meals and groceries will be given out at Ramsay Elementary School. The event is a partnership between World Central Kitchen and ALIVE! To read the event flyers, click HERE and HERE.
