Alexandria, VA – As the United States Senate Federal Credit Union (USSFCU) marks its 90th anniversary in 2025, the institution is celebrating not just longevity—but steady evolution, member-driven innovation, and a commitment to the communities it serves.
Founded in 1935 by nine Senate employees during the Great Depression, USSFCU began as a cooperative alternative to traditional banks, offering safe and accessible financial services to Capitol Hill staff.
“Ninety years later, that core philosophy—people helping people—is still the heart of everything we do,” said Arthur Green, Chief Experience & Marketing Officer at USSFCU.
A Modern Credit Union with Deep Roots
USSFCU has grown from a small operation serving Senate employees to a national, full-service financial partner supporting members in all 50 states. Its headquarters have been based in Alexandria, Virginia for over 30 years, reflecting a strong connection to the local community.
Recent member-focused advancements include:
- Enhanced services with competitive rates and loan options
- Upgraded digital tools like mobile banking, digital wallets, and secure online access
- Nationwide convenience with thousands of surcharge-free ATMs and shared branches
- Advanced security using AI-driven fraud protection and upgraded cybersecurity
Located at the corner of N. West St. and Madison St. in the Braddock Metro neighborhood of Old Town Alexandria, USSFCU’s Bowman Branch at Braddock Station remains a convenient hub for commuters, residents, and small business owners.
“We’ve never lost sight of where we came from,” Green said. “And we take great pride in being part of Alexandria, where our impact can be felt daily.”
Celebrating 90 Years: Foundation, Member Stories & Community Impact
In 2025, USSFCU launched the USSFCU Foundation, its charitable arm dedicated to supporting:
- Financial wellness
- Education and literacy
- Community development and inclusion
“The foundation is a natural extension of who we are,” Green said. “We’ve always supported community causes, but now we’re doing it in a more focused, strategic, and lasting way.”
This year’s 90th-anniversary celebrations include:
- Member appreciation events in the DMV and virtually
- Local outreach initiatives supporting Alexandria businesses and families
- A storytelling campaign featuring multi-generational members and staff
- Continued investment in digital innovation and personalized service
Defining Milestones
USSFCU’s journey has been shaped by key achievements:
- 1935 – Founded during the Great Depression
- 1990s – Headquarters relocated to Alexandria, VA
- 2015–2025 – Assets tripled from $500M to $1.5B
- Recognized nationally as a Best Place to Work by USA Today and The Washington Post
- Multiple awards for innovation in AI, IT, and member services
- 2025 – Launch of the USSFCU Foundation
“These milestones reflect more than growth,” Green said. “They represent trust, innovation, and a culture that puts people first.”
Human Touch in a Digital Age
While USSFCU continues to embrace digital-first banking, personal connection remains central. Members enjoy mobile apps, chat support, and secure online access—but real human assistance is always just a call or visit away.
One member story highlights this commitment: A retired federal employee living across the country needed urgent help during a family emergency. USSFCU not only restructured her accounts and provided access to emergency funds but also checked in personally throughout the process.
“She told us she felt like family,” Green said. “That’s exactly the experience we strive to deliver—no matter where our members are.”
Looking Ahead
As USSFCU enters its next chapter, its mission remains unchanged: putting people first.
“We’re grateful to our members, past and present,” Green said. “This 90-year milestone isn’t just about our history—it’s about our promise to keep delivering secure, compassionate, and forward-thinking financial services for generations to come.”
