Alexandria, VA – It is not only flowers and plants blooming along Mount Vernon’s Route 1 corridor, it is also original art. Murals and sculptures appear up and down the corridor, encouraged and promoted by the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation.

The first piece of original sculpture on Richmond Highway, a life-size deer, stands at the front of the Gerry Hyland Government Center, 8350 Richmond Highway. Striking and endearing, the deer is the creation of Mount Zephyr resident Fabian Lagos, a carpenter from Chile. His neighbor mentioned his talent to SFDC Director executive director Evan Kaufman, who tracked him and was wowed by his work.

This giant deer by a local artist is now at home permanently in front of the Gerry Hyland Government Center in South County.

“This piece by the gifted Mr. Lago marks a significant step in our journey to enrich the corridor’s identity through collaborative efforts in art and peacemaking,” Kaufman told Mount Vernon on the Move.

“We are even more excited that this is just the beginning.”

Kaufman shared with Zebra, “We’re about halfway done with the mural for Rising Hope Church (see artist’s rendering).” Zebra has published photos of two other significant murals on the corridor in Penn Daw and Hyla Valley.
