Mother Nature’s Art Sizzles for Summer in the City

Feeling a little hot? Cool off by visiting one of the many art exhibits in Alexandria this month! From The Atheneum to The Torpedo Factory, there's something for everyone!

Alexandria, VA – * The Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory ~ June features the annual landscape exhibit spotlighting landscape traditions in art, focusing upon creating a sense of place in the natural world, from June 10-July 3, 2021. John Salminen is the juror. He is a master award-winning watercolorist who has exhibited around the globe. While enjoying the landscapes on exhibit, don’t forget to explore Gallery 75 (the gallery space formerly known as The Bin Gallery) for some great art finds at affordable prices. The Torpedo Factory is currently closed Mondays and Tuesdays. The Art League Gallery is open Wednesday-Sunday from noon to 4 pm, (www.theartleague.org/gallery/)

* Atheneum ~ 201 Prince Street, Alexandria celebrates classical painting techniques with “Timeless Tradition: Master Copyists from the National Gallery of Art’s Copyist Program,” through June 27. The NGA is not involved with this exhibit except that the artists who participate in the copyist program are on exhibit. Who knows? You could own a fine art copy of a Van Gogh or a Monet landscape masterpiece. (www.nvfaa.org)

* Del Ray Artisans ~ “The Naked and the Newt” opened June 4 and is on exhibit through June 26. This exhibit examines the physical and metaphysical aspects of human and herpeton (reptiles and amphibians) anatomy and textures found in nature while exploring conservation themes as these life forms interact and intersect. The Virginia Herpetological Society is a partner for this show. There will be online talks as well as online and in-person worships. Check the DRA website for more information.

All the artwork is available to-go during COVID. Or leave the work on exhibit and bring your friends by to enjoy your new art acquisition. The Del Ray Artisans Gallery at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, is open Thursday and Friday from noon to 6 pm and Saturday noon until 4 pm. (delrayartisans.org)

* Gallery Underground ~ “Through the Window” is an all-member group show depicting artists’ visions of the world seen through a picture window revealing views of gardens and landscapes as well as interior spaces. Inspired by restrictive social interactions during COVID through windows and via Zoom, this all-media show takes a look at a world without and within. The gallery is located at 2100 Crystal Drive, Arlington, in the Crystal City Shops. Hours are Mon-Fri 10 am to 6 pm or by appointment. (galleryunderground.org)

* Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery ~ “Birds of a Feather” is the new show at this fabulous fiber arts studio for wearable art, home decor, jewelry, and sculpture in all textile and fiber mediums through June 27 in the Torpedo Factory. (www.potomacfiberartsgallery.com)

* Principle Gallery – 208 King Street, Alexandria. GC Meyers is back in Old Town with a solo exhibition. You won’t want to miss his brightly colored, imaginative allegorical work. Meyers’ work will also be on the website (www.principlegallery.com).

“We, Too, Sing America” by Omolará Williams McCallister continues on exhibit through July 18. A virtual reception is scheduled for Friday, June 11, at 7 pm. As always, you won’t want to miss this one! (torpedofactory.org/partners/target-gallery/)

* River Farm ~ River Farm has been in the news a lot lately. Did you know that they exhibit fine art in the mansion? Robert Murray of the Von Brahler Gallery has been showing diverse national and international masters of the natural world. Artwork on exhibit at River Farm, home to the American Horticultural Society, must represent images or themes of trees, plants, flowers, or agriculture. A curated collection of Russian paintings is now on view, including the Alexandria painter Yuri Kokoyanin (originally from St. Petersburg) and the decorative paintings by Armen Kankanian from Yerevan, Armenia who lives in Rockville. Other artists included are Vladimir Vasin, Vladimir Gremitskikh, Vladimir Odintsov, Irena Starvzhenetskaya, Oleg Nefedkin, Pavel Kucherov, and Sergey Kurylev.

The exhibit runs until August 15. There will be a reception Saturday, June 12, from 11 am to 1 pm. All ages are welcome. The reception is free, as is ample parking, and the views amid the splendid garden are something to remember. (ahsgardening.org/about-river-farm/)
