Alexandria, VA – For the past 35 years, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources recognizes October as Archaeology Month with events and programs throughout the state. The City of Alexandria has a long history of archaeological stewardship thanks to over 50 years of community-based efforts and the 1989 establishment of the city’s archaeological protection code. Today, residents and visitors can learn about past and present work on over 260 of the city’s registered sites at the free Alexandria Archaeology Museum on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory Art Center, 105 N Union Street.
Throughout the month, Alexandria Archaeology will highlight the city’s buried history with events and free programs from the West End to Old Town. Meet Alexandria archaeologists at the Old Town North Farmers’ Market on Sunday, Oct. 5; the Old Town Farmers’ Market on Saturday, Oct. 11; or the West End Farmers’ Market on Sunday, Oct. 12. Each farmers’ market will include different information and activities highlighting recent archaeological work near that area of the city.

On Saturday, Oct. 25, archaeologists will join the Torpedo Factory Art Center for Art Safari, an Alexandria tradition for more than a quarter-century, with activities for kids and families throughout the building. From 12 to 4 p.m., visitors to the Alexandria Archaeology Museum can experiment with designs like those found on 19th-century ceramics or apply their own “transfer print” temporary tattoo.
