Stitch by Stitch: Woodlawn Celebrates 63 Years of Needlework Art and Community
A beloved tradition returns with global artistry, local history, and plenty of charm
Alexandria, VA — Historic Woodlawn, once part of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, will once again be transformed into a showcase of exquisite handwork when it hosts the 63rd Annual Woodlawn Needlework Show, running March 1–31, 2026, in Alexandria.

Recognized as the largest judged needlework show in the nation, the monthlong event features more than 400 hand-sewn works by artists from across the U.S. and around the world. From delicate embroidery and samplers to intricate quilts, each piece tells a story—of patience, skill, and tradition.
This year’s show also marks the 51st anniversary of Nelly’s Needlers, the all-volunteer group whose passion for needle arts has helped raise more than $1 million for Woodlawn’s preservation since 1975. Their work ensures that history—both stitched and lived—continues to be shared with future generations.
“The Needlework Show exists because of the dedication of the Nelly’s Needlers,” said Executive Director Ruki Neuhold-Ravikumar. “Needlework is storytelling—capturing care, resilience, and identity stitch by stitch.”
Visitors can enjoy special talks and events throughout March, including story quilts, historic sampler presentations, behind-the-scenes collections displays, guided tours, live demonstrations, and Sunday stitch-in gatherings. A favorite bonus: the Nelly’s Needlers Café, serving homemade quiches, chicken salad, lemon tarts, and chocolate cake.
The Needlework Show is Woodlawn’s largest annual fundraiser, supporting both Woodlawn and the nearby Pope-Leighey House. Tickets are $20 for adults, $8 for children ages 5–12, with children under five admitted free.
Located at 9000 Richmond Highway, Woodlawn is open daily (except Tuesdays) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Come for the artistry, stay for the stories—and leave inspired.
