ALEXANDRIA, VA – The Alexandria Health Department (AHD) has issued a rabies alert after a fox in the Del Ray/Rosemont neighborhood tested positive for the disease.

On August 19, the fox came into contact with a cat near a home in the area. The animal was later confirmed to have rabies and has since died. AHD is working with the cat’s owner on safe next steps. While the situation is contained, officials warn there is now an increased risk of rabies exposure in the community.

Residents are urged to report animals showing rabies symptoms to Alexandria Animal Control at 703.746.4444. If you believe you or a family member may have been exposed to rabies, contact the Alexandria Health Department at 703.746.4910 during business hours.

How to Stay Safe

  • Avoid feeding, touching, or approaching wild, stray, or feral animals—even if they seem friendly or injured.

  • Ensure dogs and cats are current on their rabies vaccinations.

  • Remember: All dogs must be leashed in Alexandria’s public spaces and parks.
