Alexandria Teacher Named Math Educator of the Year by Virginia Organization

ALEXANDRIA, VA – Farr Quinn teaches eighth grade math at Jefferson-Houston School. She encourages her students to develop a love of learning while skillfully applying her lessons to the Virginia Standards of Learning. For her dedication, she has been named as a recipient of the William C. Lowry Math Educator of the Year award. The honor is presented annually by the Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics (VCTM).

“The Math Educator of the Year award recognizes one middle school educator as the representative of Virginia who exemplifies the dedication to teaching and learning mathematics for equity, challenging the status quo and inspiring others in the field with their innovative and creative ways of engaging students in mathematics,” said Holly Tate, Instructional Mathematics Coach at Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School.

Tate, who won the award last year, nominated her colleague. According to the VCTM website, to be nominated, individuals must:

!) Have a minimum of five years of teaching experience and teach currently, be employed as a math resource teacher or math specialist;

2) Have achieved notable accomplishments in the teaching of mathematics;

3) Be nominated by someone or self-nominate; and

4) Be a current VCTM member.

The award is given to teachers at various levels of education from the elementary to post-secondary level.

Its namesake devoted his life to teaching math to students in Virginia.  The ACPS Express newsletter reports: “Dr. Lowry is said to have had a greater impact in promoting mathematics education in the Commonwealth than any other educator.”
